Newcastle United defender Florian Lejeune took one step closer to his first-team comeback last night.
Lejeune played 45 minutes in the match between Newcastle U23 and Middlesbrough’s reserves. The defender came through unscathed as he looks to return to full fitness.
The Frenchman has been missing since April when he suffered a serious knee injury against Crystal Palace. It was an ACL rupture – the second time he has picked up that injury in quick succession.

Lejeune has been working hard to get back into the Newcastle team. He completed some of his rehabilitation in Rome but has been back in the North East to step up his recovery.
The 28-year-old is now back on grass and training with the first-team. Steve Bruce will be running the rule over the towering defender, who could provide a timely boost for Newcastle’s defensive options.
Lejeune played 45 minutes in the 2-2 draw with Boro’s second team on Monday night. This puts him one step closer to a first-team return. Here are some tweets from Newcastle fans reacting to news that Lejeune is edging closer.
