Jonjo Shelvey was given a glowing verdict in his first press conference by Eddie Howe on Friday – and Newcastle fans have responded on Twitter.

Shelvey, 29, has endured a tricky start to the season at Newcastle. The six-time England midfielder has only played four times in the Premier League.

Only two of those have been starts and against Tottenham, he was sent off. A calf injury saw him miss six of Newcastle’s first seven league games.

His form has been questioned by many of late, as has the performances of many Newcastle players. He started in the 1-1 draw against Brighton.

Speaking in his pre-Brentford press conference, Howe raved about Shelvey and explained why the £70,000-a-week (Spotrac) will be vital to his reign.

“I knew how good he was having played against him. But then when you work with him you realise he’s an incredible technician.

“He can play all sorts of passes, long & short. In terms of our philosophy he’s someone who’ll be very important to us.”

What are Newcastle fans saying about Howe verdict on Shelvey?

Newcastle do have other options in midfield. Sean Longstaff, Isaac Hayden, Jeff Hendrick and Joe Willock can all play in the middle of the park.

But none have the passing range of Shelvey. With Howe looking to make his new Newcastle side more attacking, he might get more of the ball.

Not only that, but Shelvey will have more of a chance to pick out passes and find his attacking teammates. That, is his one big strength.

Newcastle fans are excited by Howe’s comments on Shelvey, and are hopeful that they can get the best out of the Toon man.
