Davide Santon has admitted that Newcastle United still retains a place in his heart since leaving the club in the summer of 2015 to join Inter Milan – and Toon fans have considered having him back.

Now 28 years of age, Santon spent four years on the books at Newcastle. He played 94 times in all competitions for The Toon, before rejoining Inter. He is now with Champions League side AS Roma.

Santon is renowned for being able to play on either side of the defence, and has eight Italy caps. However, he failed to fulfil his potential at St. James’ Park, with his best form coming in the black and blue of Inter.

He joined Roma last summer as part of a move that saw Radja Nainggolan move to Inter. Asked by the Chronicle about his time on Tyneside, he said that he remains a fan of Newcastle.

“I still follow and support Newcastle United as it’s a team close to my heart,” Santon said. “I worked with Rafa Benitez in Inter Milan, he is a great guy. And I think will do very well managing Newcastle.

“I wish them all the best.”

Santon has played 19 times for Roma this season, and is currently working under former Chelsea, Fulham and Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri who took up the reigns at the Stadio Olimpico earlier this month.

Newcastle fans took to Twitter after hearing Santon’s comments, and many considered having the versatile defender back at St. James’ Park – a season on from his £8million (AS Roma official website) move to Roma.
