Newcastle United failed to hold onto a slender lead as Aston Villa equalised late on at St. James’ Park in a game that saw the substitutes shine – and Toon supporters have heaped praise on Tottenham loanee Danny Rose.
The Toon came into the match having beaten Sheffield United comfortably on Sunday, with Joelinton, Allan Saint-Maximin and Matt Ritchie all starting the match. They continued in attack, along with Miguel Almiron.
Newcastle finished the first half brightly but it was the combination of substitutes Andy Carroll and Dwight Gayle that broke the deadlock. Carroll combined strength and skill to play in Gayle, who finished well.

But two of Villa’s substitutes responded with an equaliser in the 83rd minute. Conor Hourihane’s corner was headed goalwards by Ahmed Elmohamady, and Jonjo Shelvey’s deflection carried the ball past Martin Dubravka.
It sees Villa hold onto a glimmer of hope in remaining in the top tier, while Newcastle are just a point away from the magic 40 mark. Rose, 29, started and finished the match on the left side of the defence.
Many Newcastle fans were impressed with the England international in what was his seventh appearance for the Toon. Some even suggested that Newcastle should consider a permanent deal for the ex-Leeds youth player.
