Newcastle United fans are reportedly interested in raiding Atlanta United for a second time – after signing Miguel Almiron in January 2019. This time, it is for goal machine Josef Martinez, and Newcastle fans have reacted om Twitter.
The MLS campaign is currently in its off-season after Seattle Sounders were crowned champions of the 2019 campaign. Martinez, 25, scored 33 goals in 39 games – but his side could only reach the semi-finals, after a third-placed league finish.
Martinez, a 54-time Venezuela international, has caught the eye of many European clubs after scoring 88 goals in 100 Atlanta appearances. He won the 2018 MLS Cup with Almiron, and was also named 2018’s Most Valuable Player.

Now, The Chronicle’s chief football writer Lee Ryder has confirmed in a Q&A session that Newcastle have scouted former Torino forward Martinez – and are indeed monitoring him ahead of a potential move.
The Toon do have plenty of options up front, four to be exact in Joelinton, Yoshinori Muto, Andy Carroll and Dwight Gayle. The latter, though, is being linked with a move while Carroll is yet to score. Joelinton has managed two since his £40million move.
Meanwhile, Japan international Muto is surplus to requirements despite Newcastle’s injury list. Toon fans have taken to Twitter after hearing the news that their club are reportedly monitoring Martinez, and the majority are excited.
