Newcastle United are reportedly considering a move to sign Barcelona midfielder Carles Alena this summer – and Toon fans have responded on Twitter, urging their club to complete a deal for the Real Betis loanee.
Spanish newspaper Marca have claimed that the Toon are eyeing the 22-year-old this summer, given that he is likely to leave the Nou Camp as he struggles for regular game time. So much so that Alena decided to leave on loan in January.
Just 39 senior appearances for Barcelona have followed for the club since his debut in November 2016 under Luis Enrique. An exciting talent, the Spain Under-21 international is renowned for ability to score and create from deep.
Alena becomes the fifth Barca player to have been linked with Newcastle. Philippe Coutinho (Mundo Deportivo), Arturo Vidal (Mundo Deportivo), Antoine Griezmann (Sport Mediaset) and Brazilian right-back Emerson (SPORT) are all reported targets.
Given his debut by Luis Enrique, the ex-Barca boss said after a goal against Hercules on his debut – as per Tribal Football: “I’m satisfied with the goal, but if I got hold of him I’d have given him a clip around the ear. Positionally he has to improve things.”
Newcastle are well stocked in midfield, with the Longstaff brothers, Jonjo Shelvey, Isaac Hayden and Nabil Bentaleb. But Matty Longstaff’s contract has not been sorted, Bentaleb is only on loan and Hayden continues to be linked with the exit door.
Newcastle supporters have reacted on Twitter to the reported news that their club are interested in signing Alena this summer, and many feel as though he would be a good signing for the club.
