Newcastle United are reportedly interested in making a cut-price move to sign midfielder Maxime Gonalons this summer from AS Roma – and Toon fans have reacted on Twitter.
Italian outlet CalcioMercato have claimed that Newcastle have identified Roma midfielder Gonalons this summer, with the 30-year-old likely to leave the Italian club as he is surplus to requirements.
The France international was loaned to La Liga side Sevilla last term, but only managed 13 appearances for the Spanish outfit. He has since returned to Roma, where he has two years left on his contract.
Gonalons is a Lyon icon after clocking up 334 appearances for the French side before leaving the club, and is renowned for his array of passing, leadership and passionate style of play.
Newcastle are likely to be after central midfielders, with Steve Bruce finally confirmed. Sean Longstaff could be on his way to Manchester United, while Diame has already left the club on a free transfer. He has joined Al-Ahli.
Newcastle fans reacted to the news that their club could reportedly sign Gonalons this summer, and the majority are stunned – with the report claiming Gonalons is a cheap replacement for Diame.
Many believe the low-cost option was to keep Diame, who had a good rapport with the fans.
Wouldn't Mo Diame have been a 'low cost replacement' for Mo Diame? #nufc

Low cost?!?!! How much was Diame?

I think giving mo Diame a new contract was the low cost option. Since he's 30 it makes such a transfer as likely as a takeover.

if that’s legit, he would be a good replacement he’s just too old for the model
