Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Everton midfielder James McCarthy for a cut-price figure of just £5million this summer – and Toon fans have reacted on Twitter.

The Sun claim 28-year-old McCarthy will be allowed to leave Goodison Park this summer, after Marco Silva secured a permanent deal for Andre Gomes from Barcelona and Fabian Delph from Manchester City.

The former Wigan Athletic midfielder has entered the final 12 months of his contract at St. James’ Park. He is believed to be earning £50,000 a week at Goodison Park, six years after joining Everton for £13million in 2013 (Independent).

Owner Mike Ashley is said to be looking to bring younger players to Tyneside this summer with plenty of resale value. The club have landed Joelinton, and are linked with Allan Saint-Maximin and Jarrod Bowen.

However, Newcastle need additions all over the park and the money is not indefinite. The club could do with bringing in a few squad players on the cheap, as well as big-money signings such as Joelinton.

Newcastle fans have reacted on Twitter to the news that the club could land McCarthy for a fee far cheaper than the one Everton paid Wigan six years ago. Many believe he would be a good signing, if he can stay fit.
