It was the news that Newcastle United fans were fearing all summer and now the club have confirmed on their official website that Rafa Benitez will not be the club’s manager next season.
Benitez will leave the club on 30 June when he contract expires, with protracted negotiations having failed to reach a satisfactory conclusion.
A club statement said: “It is with disappointment that we announce manager Rafael Benítez will leave Newcastle United upon the expiry of his contract on 30th June 2019.
“We have worked hard to extend Rafa’s contract over a significant period of time, however it has not been – and will not be – possible to reach an agreement with Rafa and his representatives. The process to appoint a successor will now begin.”

Unsurprisingly, many Magpies took to Twitter to voice their anger about the club’s decision, the latest in a long line of incompetencies shown by Mike Ashley at the helm.
Benitez was the club’s one source of hope going into the new campaign but he has effectively been seen off by Ashley and that hurts a fanbase that is passionate as any in the country.
It’s hard for any supporter, with the possible exception of Sunderland fans, not to feel an element of sympathy with the Newcastle fans as they’re absolutely fuming…
