Newcastle fans react as club closing in on appointment of U23 boss Elliott Dickman
Elliott Dickman is reportedly set to be handed the reigns of the Newcastle Under-23 side by the club’s new owners – and Toon fans have responded.
They report that Dickman has impressed in the interview process – with Newcastle also staging talks with ex-Toon striker Shefki Kuqi over a return.
Newcastle needed to hire an Under-23 manager, after Chris Hogg left the club to become assistant manager at MK Dons in the summer.
Toon icon Steve Harper has since taken over, but not on a permanent basis. Dickman is set to come in, despite being at Sunderland for so long.
He started off as a player but had to retire at 20 due to injury. Dickman spent plenty of time on the Under-18 staff, before 23’s duty in 2017.
Since his appointment as manager of the second string, he has taken charge of over 100 matches. Newcastle have chosen to add that experience.
Dickman to Newcastle: What do fans think of the Sunderland man?
In what is the first serious move made by the club’s new owners, it is somewhat of a surprise that they are set to raid Sunderland for Dickman.
But on paper, it is a move that suits both Newcastle – and Dickman. He needed a step up, and this is the perfect move for him, geographically.
For Newcastle, they are adding a coach on the up – and good back-up in case they ever need an interim boss. Newcastle fans have reacted on Twitter.
