Ciaran Clark is reportedly on the verge of signing a fresh contract with Newcastle United – and some of the club’s fans on Twitter have responded with huge positivity to the speculation.

The Telegraph claims that the Irish defender is “close” to agreeing a new deal and extending his stay on Tyneside.

It is explained that Crystal Palace have been interested in trying to sign the centre-back, but it looks like he will  be remaining at St James’ Park.

Clark, 31, is entering the final six months of his contract with the Magpies and has been with them since 2016.

He’s now expected to commit his future and he’s an important figure for Steve Bruce’s XI.

The centre-half is so often a rock in the defence for Newcastle, albeit his time with them has been plagued by injury problems.

He is now on a run though of nine consecutive starts in the Premier League and is a senior defender that brings some authority to the backline.

A selection of Newcastle supporters on social media feel that the decision to keep Clark beyond this season is a smart move.

The report around Clark’s future come at a time where there is real pressure with the Toon, after they lost to bottom of the table Sheffield United on Tuesday in the Premier League.
