Newcastle United winger Christian Atsu reportedly rejected a move to Scottish champions Celtic on deadline day as he struggles to get into Steve Bruce’s starting eleven – but Toon fans think he should have gone.
Atsu, 28, is in his fourth season at Newcastle – after joining the club on loan from Chelsea during the promotion-winning campaign. He completed a permanent move after that loan, and has since remained on Tyneside.
The Ghana international has now clocked up 118 appearances in all competitions for Newcastle, after difficult loan spells with the likes of Everton, Bournemouth and Malaga. He also has more than 30 appearances for Porto on his CV.

Under Steve Bruce, though, Atsu has failed to gain a place in the starting eleven. Indeed, Rafa Benitez’s replacement has preferred the likes of Miguel Almiron and Allan Saint-Maximin – while Joelinton and Matt Ritchie have been used out wide.
The 60-time international has 18 months remaining on his contract, but according to Sky Sports’ transfer deadline day blog [16:42], Celtic made an approach to land the winger on loan until the end of the season.
However, The Daily Record claimed soon after that Atsu – who is earning £30,000 at Newcastle (Spotrac) – had rejected a move in order to fight for his place at Newcastle. Toon fans, though, think he should have left.
