Newcastle fans react as Celtic and Rangers reportedly eye their 19-year-old talent, for a bargain fee

Celtic and Rangers are reportedly showing interest in Newcastle midfielder Joe White with his contract expiring in June – and Toon fans are worried.

White, 19, has been a regular for Newcastle’s Under-23 side over the last couple of seasons. His form has seen him appear on the senior bench.

He had a hand in 17 goals during 33 games for the 18’s, scoring eight and creating nine. One goal and four assists for the 23’s, as a central midfielder.

Despite his early form, he is yet to make his senior bow. White’s future is now in doubt, with the contract due to expire in the summer of 2022.

The Chronicle says Celtic and Rangers are keen on signing Newcastle’s White, with Bundesliga and Eredivisie sides also said to be interested.

White can be signed on a pre-contract arrangement by non-English sides – a deal that would see clubs have to bring him in for a small compensation fee.

What are Newcastle fans saying, as Celtic and Rangers look at White?

Clearly, White is a player with plenty of potential. The new owners will surely have an eye on White’s contract situation – and look to keep him.

Even more so, amid reports that now other clubs are looking to sign him from Newcastle. Academy manager Steve Harper will want him to stay.

But White will want assurances that he sees a path into the senior side. Newcastle lack midfielders at the moment, so there could be a chance.

Newcastle fans have reacted on Twitter to the reports that Celtic and Rangers could look to bring north of the border.
