Aston Villa surprised many on Wednesday when they confirmed the season-long loan signing of Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley in what is seen as somewhat of a coup by the Midlands outfit – and Newcastle fans have reacted on Twitter, frustrated.
Barkley, 26, has agreed a loan move to Villa Park – though the move does not include a permanent option. The England international has decided to go on loan with Euro 2021 coming up, and a lack of game time at Chelsea.
The former Everton star was in and out of the side last season, with the likes of Jorginho, N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic and others preferred in the middle of the park. The signing of Hakim Ziyech has since joined the club from Ajax.
Barkley – who has scored 11 and created 11 during 86 appearances in his time at Chelsea – is now tasked with helping Jack Grealish, John McGinn and co. in avoiding another Premier League relegation scrap come next April and May.
Newcastle, meanwhile, lack goals in midfield. Jonjo Shelvey, Isasc Hayden, the Longstaff brothers, Jeff Hendrick and the Toon’s other options are good midfielders – but they lack a player that will score regularly from deep. Barkley can do that.
The Telegraph claimed back in May, when a takeover was still being talked about, that Barkley could move to Tyneside. Now, with Barkley having moved to Villa, Toon supporters are frustrated on Twitter.
Some real ambition being shown by Aston Villa!! We should have been all over Ross Barkley!! #NUFC

Ross Barkley to Villa is a great deal & exactly the kind of player #nufc need. Ideal replacement for Shelvey

Villa making absolute moves right the way up to the end of the window, what a signing Ross Barkley is for them. Newcastle Stagnant. Complete Joke. #NUFC

I see Villa have brought in Barkley. A midfielder with dynamism, just what WE needed. Meanwhile, at NUFC we’re desperately short of cover at left-back and centre-half, woefully short of midfield creativity, and an injury to Callum Wilson away from being relegation fodder. Lovely!
