Newcastle fans react as Alan Shearer comments on potential takeover

Alan Shearer has claimed in his Sun column that he is not going to get excited about Newcastle United’s reportedly imminent takeover until an announcement is made – and Toon fans have responded to their legendary number nine’s comments.

Amanda Staveley’s efforts over the past three years look as though they are about to come fruition, by finally taking over from Mike Ashley and ending his 13-year stint as Newcastle owner. A deal of £300million is believed to have been agreed.

Staveley’s bid has been financially backed by the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund, who will control 80% of Newcastle in the new-look board. Staveley’s PCP Capital Partners will boast a 10% stake, as will the Reuben Brothers.

Newcastle legend Shearer claimed that although it is a very exciting time for Toon supporters, he will not get excited until Ashley is confirmed as having nothing to do with the club – given failed takeover bids in the past.

“Like so many Newcastle fans, I refuse to get excited until the sale of the club actually goes through. I’m reluctant to get my hopes up — we’ve been here before, so what is the point? There are still questions to be answered,” Shearer said.

“We are yet to hear about the finance of the deal and still haven’t heard anything from Mike Ashley or the prospective buyers.
With Ashley, once it gets close he may well  try to move the goalposts. So until the deal is done, I remain cautious.”

Newcastle have already been linked with a number of high-profile players which comes with a takeover. Barcelona trio Arturo Vidal, Philippe Coutinho and Antoine Griezmann have all been linked, as has manager Massimiliano Allegri.

Newcastle supporters have reacted on Twitter to Shearer’s comments and while many agreed with his trepidation over a failed move, many are also excited at the prospect of Ashley finally leaving.
