Elliot Anderson netted during a 4-3 win for Newcastle United’s Under-23 side and Leeds United on Friday afternoon in what has turned out to be an excellent week for the teenage star – and Toon fans have applauded his efforts.
Turning 18 on Friday, the attacker put pen to paper on a new contract with Newcastle. He then lined-up alongside the likes of Rodrigo Vilca, Paul Dummett, Henri Saivet and Yannick Toure – as The Toon’s reserves looked to overcome Leeds.
It got off to a bad start. A brace from Scottish winger Liam McCarron, followed by a penalty from the ever-impressive Joe Gelhardt had Newcastle on the ropes even before the half-time whistle. But Toure headed home from a corner.
Anderson, who was making just his third Premier League 2 outing of the season, then scored from the penalty spot after a mistake from Leeds goalkeeper Elia Caprile. A Nohan Kenneh own goal saw Leeds surrender their three-goal lead.
Then, in the dying moments, substitute Stan Flaherty finished perfectly to win 4-3 and perform the ultimate turnaround. Despite Saivet and Vilca starting in midfield, it was Anderson that shone through – proving to be the side’s best player.
Newcastle supporters have reacted on Twitter to Anderson’s display and many are excited by what they see. One fan even compared him to Aston Villa loanee and England international Ross Barkley.
