Mo Diame came on as a half-time substitute in the defeat to West Ham on Saturday evening – and many Newcastle United fans were waxing lyrical about the quality of his performance.

The Magpies suffered a 2-0 defeat at the London Stadium in the Premier League, which came off the back of two consecutive victories at St James’ Park.

Rafael Benitez’s side are six points outside the relegation zone after a recent upturn in results, but may have had a reminder at the weekend that the job is not done.

Declan Rice’s header and Mark Noble’s penalty in the first-half ended up giving hosts West Ham the league victory.

The North East club face Everton next weekend in their next game and will be hoping for a response after West Ham proved just a step too far.

A selection of Newcastle fans were delighted to see the contribution of Diame despite the fact he ended up on the losing side.

The 31-year-old came onto the field for the second-half in place of Sean Longstaff and provided a physical force that put himself about all over the park.

He’s fallen out of the starting XI right now due to recent form, but certainly made his impact as a substitute to prove what he can do.
