The Magpies could not follow up their opening day victory over West Ham United, disappointingly losing 3-0 to the Seagulls at St. James’ Park.
Steve Bruce’s team were second best all over the pitch and had very few chances.

Callum Wilson squandered a great headed opportunity in the second half but aside from that, Newcastle rarely threatened.
Bruce’s team were shellshocked by two early goals from Neal Maupay and simply couldn’t get back into the contest, with Neil Potter’s side setting up with an impressive defensive shape.
Brighton’s Tariq Lamptey especially caused plenty of issues down Newcastle’s right side, before he had to depart after picking up an injury.
Newcastle really struggled to create meaningful attacks in the game, but the team did look slightly better once Miguel Almiron was introduced in the second half.
The Paraguay international was again left on the bench by Bruce much to the frustration of many fans before the game.

But he looked lively when he came on and will surely be in contention to start against Tottenham Hotspur next.
Newcastle fans on social media were fairly angry with their team’s display, with many questioning Bruce’s decision not to start Almiron:
