Fabian Schar played 90 minutes in Switzerland’s draw away to Republic of Ireland on Thursday night – and some Newcastle United fans on Twitter praised their defender for his performance.

The 27-year-old Magpies defender starred in a 1-1 draw for his national side Switzerland in a European Championship qualifier fixture.

Schar opened the scoring in the 74th minute with a brilliant first-time finish that he fired low into the net to complete a team goal.

But hosts Ireland did find an equaliser to earn a point, as Sheffield United stoker David McGoldrick netted a header late on.

A selection of Newcastle supporters on social media watched their star in action on the international stage and were raving about his performance.

He is a commanding centre-back that has shown at St James’ Park he’s got an eye for goal, scoring five times in just 33 games since he joined the Magpies.

The defender is a calming influence at the back with his physical presence and he plays out from the back too, but the attacking side of his game is such an asset.

He finished off his Switzerland goal with such great composure low into the bottom corner and is a real favourite in the North-East.
