Newcastle fans on Twitter post tributes as Demba Ba retires
Newcastle fans have been posting tributes as Demba Ba announced his retirement.
The Senegalese striker has called time on his career at the age of 36.
During his time at Newcastle, Ba very quickly became a fan favourite.
He was incredible at St. James’ Park.
The fans only got to witness him make 58 appearances for the club, yet he scored 29 goals and got seven assists in that time (Transfermarkt).
Ba posted an emotional tribute on Twitter as he called time on his playing career.
The former Magpie said:
“What a wonderful journey it has been. Beside all the sweat and tears I have faced, football has given me so many beautiful emotions.”
“From the passion of the fans and the noise coming from the stands after every goal to the connection with my team mates on and off the field, this will forever remain in my head and heart.”
The fans are certainly sad to see him retire too, even if it’s been nine years since he left the club in 2012.
Ba’s consistent goalscoring made him a quick favourite in the North East.
Many fans are even claiming that he’s the best striker they’ve seen since Alan Shearer.
That’s certainly high praise from the Geordies.
It’s not misplaced, though.
Ba was sensational for Newcastle, striking up a wonderful partnership with his compatriot Papiss Cisse.
Since leaving Newcastle, Ba has played and scored for the likes of Chelsea, Besiktas and Istanbul Basaksehir.
He even managed to win some silverware in his final years, winning the Turkish Super Lig in 2017 and 2020 (Transfermarkt).
That’s no less than he deserves.
It’s just a shame he couldn’t help Newcastle to any silverware.
Regardless, he’ll always be welcome back at St. James’ Park.

My favourite striker since Shearer. A fantastic striker that I wish we could have enjoyed for longer. Stupidly low release clause.— Benjamin Williams (@BenjawiBen) September 13, 2021
