Newcastle fans on Twitter call for Bruce to scrap three centre-back system

Steve Bruce’s Newcastle have exclusively used a three centre-back system this season.

However, the Magpies are winless after four games in the Premier League.

That’s had a lot of fans taking to Twitter to call for Bruce to make a tactical switch to a flat back four.

Given the number of defensive options that the Geordies have, a four at the back system could work.

Matt Ritchie could retain his place as a left-back, as can Javier Manquillo on the right.

Then centrally any two of Jamaal Lascelles, Federico Fernandez, Fabian Schar and Ciaran Clark can feature.

This would allow the Magpies to have an extra midfielder or attacker as they look to push and get some points on the board.

So far, just one points has come from four games as the club sit 19th in the Premier League.

Last season, Newcastle won 12 Premier League.

Six of those came whilst using a four at the back system (Transfermarkt).

This season, though, Bruce is yet to chance a four man defence, something which has to change.

Only Norwich, who have lost their four opening games, have a worse record than Bruce’s Newcastle.

Next up for the Geordies is a clash with Leeds on Friday night, which could be a chance to use a new system.

Packing out the midfield and getting more players into areas where they can support Allan Saint-Maximin could prove crucial.

The Frenchman has been crucial to Newcastle’s season so far.

He’s scored or assisted three of Newcastle’s five Premier League goals, so getting players up with him is a must.

The extra support is even more necessary seeing as Callum Wilson is out injured.

The 29-year-old is the Geordies’ man goal scorer, so others need to step up now.

That’s more likely to happen when less players are being deployed in defence.
