Newcastle fans noticed current star Schar alongside former defender Mbabu on international duty

It was a case of Newcastle past and present coming together for Switzerland last night, in their Nations League semi-final against Portugal.

The assignment always looked an uphill battle for the Swiss, with their opponents being on home turf and their handy squad topped off by the evergreen Cristiano Ronaldo in attack.

But current Magpie Fabian Schar lined up alongside Kevin Mbabu, the 24-year-old right back sold by Rafa Benitez to Young Boys in 2017.

He has now developed into an international standard defender and many Magpies watching on were impressed with his performance.

Especially in light of the poor performances last season by DeAndre Yedlin, the supporters were quick to bemoan what they might have had if Benitez hadn’t sold Mbabu.

It wasn’t to be for the Swiss, who ended up losing 3-1, as Ronaldo grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck and netted two late goals to complete a hat-trick.

But Newcastle fans were more gutted that they no longer have Mbabu…
