Newcastle United’s Miguel Alimron received a fierce challenge away on international duty – and some of the club’s supporters on Twitter were stunned at the severity of the incident.
The 26-year-old attacker has joined up with national side Paraguay during the international break and he played in a World Cup qualifier on Thursday against Peru.
The two South American countries finished level at 2-2 after a memorable second-half, but it may be remembered even more for a horrendous tackle.
Almiron was stopped on his tracks in the 17th minute after a major collision with Peru defender Carlos Zambrano, who flattened the Newcastle man to the ground after raising his arm to his face when he was rushing towards the edge of the box.
Almiron, who cost Newcastle £20million (BBC), has started the new season in great form for his club and appears to be growing in confidence every week.
Magpies boss Steve Bruce appears to be using him more in central areas than out wide this campaign, something that has seen him score one goal and managed three assists in the opening six games of the season in all competitions.
He is a left-footed speed machine that is part of a competitive squad now at St James’ Park and the presence of new striker Callum Wilson appears to be getting the best out of attackers around him.

A selection of Newcastle supporters on social media were outraged by the challenge on Almiron on Thursday.
