Newcastle eventually got through to the fourth round of the FA Cup at the second attempt last night with a helter-skelter 4-2 extra time win against Championship side Blackburn at Ewood Park last night.

The game saw the Magpies’ already thin squad hit by more injuries as they sacrificed a two-goal lead within the space of 23 minutes before having to win the game all over again.

It looked to be a straight-forward assignment ahead for Rafa Benitez’s side when they raced into a two-goal lead halfway through the first period.

Academy graduate Sean Longstaff got his side off to the perfect start, before fellow youngster Callum Roberts doubled the lead to put Newcastle in cruise control.

Injury chaos and a brief collapse followed before an extra time revival saw Joselu and Ayoze Perez win the day, but Newcastle fans were excited about the two goalscoring youngsters.

Both Longstaff and Roberts bagged their first goal for the club and with Benitez’s options dwindling, the supporters would love to see the academy products on a more regular basis to aid their survival bid.
