Newcastle United picked up a boost in their Premier League survival bid on Saturday after beating strugglers Huddersfield Town 2-0 at St James’ Park.

Rafael Benitez’s team moved four points clear of safety in the league table, as they cruised to a comfortable victory.

Centre-forward Salomon Rondon opened the scoring early in the second-half, before Ayoze Perez added a second shortly after.

The North East club dominated the contest due to Tommy Smith’s red card in the 20th minute and the visitors did well to keep the scoreline down to a minimum.

Newcastle’s offence was very much in the spotlight following their numerous chances, but some fans were discussing defender Florian Lejeune after the game.

The 27-year-old centre-back is a regular starter in the XI and he had very little to do defensively against Huddersfield.

But he showed off his excellent range of passing on a number of occasions and long-range switches of play have been a big feature of his game during his time with the club.

The Magpies paid £8.7million (Sky Sports) for Lejeune back in 2017 and he’s proven to be a consistent performer since.
