Newcastle United have reportedly been offered the chance to sign Southampton striker Charlie Austin – and some of the club’s supporters on Twitter have fully backed the idea to bring him to St James’ Park.
According to the Chronicle, Steve Bruce’s side have been offered the 30-year-old this summer after a fallout he’s had at St Mary’s.
The report explains that Southampton want to offload the striker in the current window and that he would be available for a “knockdown rate” due to the fact he’s in the final year of his deal.
Austin looks destined to depart St Mary’s, but it’s unclear on if Newcastle will take up the option to sign him.
He’s someone that has proven himself to be a lethal poacher in the Championship, while in recent years he’s performed well in the Premier League too.
The striker is fresh off the back of a disappointing three-goal season with Southampton last year, but he’s still got decent movement and is a threat in the air.
Bruce already has Joelinton from Hoffenheim as a new forward option to the squad, but they have lost the goals of Ayoze Perez and Salomon Rondon from last year.
A selection of Newcastle supporters on social media are convinced that Austin could be worth a punt.
He would provide an experienced option to lead the line and the squad does still look short of goals.
Here are some Newcastle fans commenting on the Austin speculation:
He scores goals.
Buy him please.

I’d rather him than Carroll or welbeck

No brainer for me. Not the player/scorer he used to be but I have always been a fan. Its unlikely, but I would take him.

Could be a real canny signing, like Daryl Murphy but it won’t happen

I would take him. He has scored goals. Worth a 3-4 m punt

Not very skillful or pacey, but he scores goals. Out and out goalscorer. Be a good signing if we could snap him up.
