Newcastle fans impressed by Jonjo Shelvey in pre-season victory

Jonjo Shelvey looked sharp for Newcastle United in a pre-season win against West Ham on Saturday morning – and some of the club’s supporters on Twitter were impressed by his performance.

The Magpies secured a 1-0 victory in the Premier League Asia Trophy and it means they finish third in the pre-season competition.

New manager Steve Bruce watched on from the stands for the first time and saw his team win in a fairly competitive match.

Yoshinori Muto scored the only goal in the first-half, as he converted a cross from defender Jamie Sterry.

Shelvey lasted 78 minutes on the pitch before his withdrawal and was one of the most eye-catching players.

The 27-year-old central midfielder helped dictate play with his calmness in possession and pulled out some of his trademark long-range passes.

He struggled for regular minutes last season at St James’ Park, but perhaps this year under a new manager in Bruce can see him break back into the XI.

The Englishman has been inconsistent throughout his career, but there is no doubting his technical ability and he can help Newcastle gain control in a midfield battle.

A selection of Magpies supporters on social media were delighted with what they saw from Shelvey and feel he could be an important player for the club.
