Newcastle United managed to get the better of League One Rochdale on Tuesday night in an FA Cup third round replay – and some of the club’s supporters were thrilled with Matty Longstaff’s performance.

The Magpies had previously drawn away to Rochdale, but produced a much stronger display to win 4-1 at St James’ Park.

Eoghan O’Connell’s own goal gave Newcastle an advantage early, before Longstaff and Miguel Almiron also got on the scoresheet soon after.

Joelinton scored a crucial goal in the second-half to boost his confidence and ran straight to his manager Steve Bruce to celebrate with, as he’s continued to stand by the struggling player.

Newcastle went into the midweek fixture off the back of five games in all competitions without a victory, so it was vital they returned to winning ways.

A selection of Newcastle supporters on social media picked out Longstaff for special praise following his latest contribution.

The 19-year-old paired alongside older brother Sean in the centre of the park and looked the more threatening.

He got himself on the scoresheet in spectacular fashion, as he cushioned down a high ball in the penalty area and had the composure to fire into the net.
