Matty Longstaff started in the pre-season fixture against Preston on Saturday – and some Newcastle United fans on Twitter were impressed with what they saw from him.

The 19-year-old was involved in the team that played in the first-half and he showed no signs of nerves stepping up with the senior.

He showed a real tenacity in the centre of the park, which did earn him a booking for a rough challenge.

The central midfielder is yet to play a competitive game in the first-team, but will hope to make his breakthrough this season.

New manager Steve Bruce has clearly seen something he likes in him and his older brother Sean Longstaff played in the second-half.

The Magpies suffered a 2-1 defeat to Championship opposition Preston and were in front through Jonjo Shelvey’s long-range free-kick in the first-half, which the goalkeeper should have done better with.

Newcastle gave away two penalties in the second period and Paul Gallagher converted twice from the spot to secure a win.

There was the chance for fans to see new summer signing Joelinton in action, with the striker’s debut consisting of him earning a penalty for his side and also conceding one for a foul in the box.
