Newcastle fans hail goalscorer Perez for hardworking display in late Wolves loss

Ayoze Perez is one of the few creative influences on Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle United side but his contribution has been called into question at times this season.

The Spanish playmaker can improve on being more clinical in front of goal, but he bagged another when Wolves visited the Magpies yesterday afternoon.

His header pulled the Magpies level at 1-1 and it looked for all the world that they were going to preserve that scoreline even after DeAndre Yedlin’s second half red card.

Perez was part of a side that put in a real shift, but it came to nothing as Matt Doherty nodded home in stoppage time to deny Newcastle a share of the spoils.

But for a player who can perhaps be seen as something of a luxury at times, there was no doubting Perez pulled his weight in a significant defensive effort and the Newcastle fans responded to that.

They were keen to show their appreciation to a player who has taken his fair share of criticism this season even in spite of a seventh home defeat of the season so far.
