Newcastle United have announced that Matt Ritchie is set to be sidelined through injury for two months – and some of the club’s supporters on Twitter are gutted with the update.
The 29-year-old was forced off injured in mid-week during the Carabao Cup second round tie with Leicester City, which they ended up losing on penalties.
He was on the end of a tough challenge from Leicester midfielder Hamza Choudhury on the stroke of half-time and didn’t re-emerge for the second-half.
Magpies boss Steve Bruce has confirmed (official Twitter) that Ritchie is expected to be unavailable for two months with ankle ligament damage.
He’s become a vital player at St James’ Park in recent times in the left wing-back role and his work-rate is such a key part of his game.
But he’s sidelined for the imminent future, which surely leaves either Paul Dummett or Jetro Willems as the main candidates to fill his spot.
A selection of Newcastle supporters on social media feel that Ritchie is going the be a significant absence and rate him as one of the team’s most important players.
He has started the four games across all competitions under Bruce, but the manager will need to find a new solution and that starts at home to Watford on Saturday in the Premier League.
Here are some Newcastle fans on Ritchie:
Ritchie out for 2 months is a real blow for #NUFC he has always been in the squad during any good form we have had since he joined. Will be a miss for the rest of the team as well because of his organisation and leadership. Up to one of Willems or Manquillo to step up now. #nufc

Bad news about Matt Ritchie. Think what you like about his football skills but his character, attitude and work effort is irreplaceable in our squad #NUFC

It’s going to be an even tougher couple of months now @SkySports_Keith now we haven’t got energetic Ritchie very disappointed but the player should have seen red for that tackle @PLComms @FA should have looked into this one but they won’t because it’s nufc ridiculous.

Ritchie is one of the players who demands effort & a certain level every week from his team mates, is a vocal leader on the pitch and leads by example. Not the best player in the world but the type of player every team needs.
