Rafa Benitez’s desire to protect his threadbare squad pressed Fabian Schar into action as a makeshift midfielder in Newcastle’s FA Cup third round replay against Blackburn at Ewood Park last night.
A surprisingly topsy-turvy game saw the Magpies eventually run out 4-2 winners against the Championship side but they did suffer some injury blows along the way.
That raises the possibility that Schar will remain in the side, in his unfamiliar role and he certainly did a good job in it last night, as his team-mates limped off all around him.
He showcased an impressive range of passing to go along with his natural defensive instincts and proved himself to be a genuine option in the engine room for Benitez’s side.
On a night packed full of incident, Schar’s class shone through and the supporters responded with pleasure on Twitter, with some urging Benitez to keep him in that role for the forthcoming crunch clash against Cardiff.
We’ve put together some of the best reaction from the fans who are also pleased to see their side finally progress in a cup competition…
