Newcastle fans drool over West Brom star after FA Cup triumph

Newcastle United squeezed into the FA Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday night with a 3-2 win over West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns – and Toon supporters have drooled over West Brom’s on-loan midfielder Filip Krovinovic.

Steve Bruce’s side surprised many as they eased to a 3-0 lead just before the hour mark. A first-half brace from Miguel Almiron was followed by a goal from Valentino Lazaro, but the end result did not reflect the first 60 minutes of Newcastle’s display.

Almiron opened the scoring after an excellent run and pass from Allan Saint-Maximin, before smashing home a second into the top corner after an exquisite backheel from Joelinton. Lazaro made it three, after Jonathan Bond dropped a cross.

But the introduction of Benfica loanee Krovinovic, immediately after Lazaro’s goal, changed proceedings. Indeed, West Brom instantly became more of a threat and controlled the ball in midfield more – putting Newcastle on the back foot.

The 24-year-old’s presence saw West Brom claw themselves back into the game, scoring through Matt Phillips in the 74th minute and then in injury time thanks to Kenneth Zohore. Krovinovic was at the heart of everything West Brom did.

Newcastle fans reacted to the Croatia Under-21 international’s excellent cameo role, and many have urged the club to sign him from Benfica – his parent club. It remains to be seen how much Benfica want for Krovinovic.
