Newcastle United fought bravely in their 3-1 defeat to Liverpool on Thursday night at Anfield – despite failing to hold on to their lead. Toon fans have praised Joelinton for his monumental effort and work rate on Twitter.

Eddie Howe’s side came into the match having suffered a 4-0 drubbing by a Leicester City side that was without Jamie Vardy on Sunday. Whatever Howe has worked on since, did the trick.

Coming up against one of the toughest oppositions in the league, away from home, Newcastle held their own. England international Shelvey gave the Toon the lead with a delightful strike from all of 25 yards out.

Leaving Alisson with no chance, Shelvey found the corner. But within a matter of moments, they found themselves 2-1 down. A controversial goal scored by Diogo Jota levelled the tie, with Isaac Hayden down.

The midfielder suffered a head injury but referee Mike Dean allowed play to continue. A few minutes later, and Mo Salah put Liverpool 2-1 ahead despite Martin Dubravka’s best efforts between the sticks.

Late in the second half, Trent Alexander-Arnold scored the pick of the goals to make it 3-1 to Liverpool. His beautiful effort flew past Dubravka’s despairing dive, into the top corner to flatter the Reds.

What are Newcastle fans saying about Joelinton in Liverpool defeat?

Joelinton looks like a man reborn under the guidance of Howe. Dropping deep into midfield at times, with the Brazilian playing behind Allan Saint-Maximin – the Toon’s record signing was excellent.

Work rate, determination and quality when in possession, he probably did not deserve to be on the losing side. Newcastle fans discussed the attacker’s efforts, applauding him for his display.
