Newcastle fans despair as Bruce talks up Dwight Gayle return

Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce has admitted he is desperate to get striker Dwight Gayle back from injury.

The 28-year-old is currently sidelined with a calf problem, which he picked up in pre-season.

Gayle is, of course, back on the scene at St. James’ Park having spent the 2018/19 season on loan at West Bromwich Albion where he scored 24 goals.

Albion apparently tried to buy him on transfer deadline day but a move did not materialise, prompting them to sign Charlie Austin instead.

Bruce, who revealed he has previously tried to sign Gayle numerous times for various Championship clubs, is hoping to see the Englishman back in the picture very soon amid the first-team’s early struggles in attack.

He said (quoted by The Chronicle): “I hope he can get fit again. When I analysed the squad I know he’s capable of scoring a goal.

“If you are a Championship manager you’d take Dwight Gayle because he’s the best striker in the Championship.

“He must be able to contribute to the Premier League too. I hope he will be back before Andy Carroll (September).”
