Matty Longstaff was handed his senior debut by Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce as The Toon suffered penalty-shootout heartbreak against Leicester City – but many fans were impressed by their newest star.
Longstaff, 19, has had to watch from the sidelines as older brother Sean stole the headlines during the second half of the campaign – so much so that the midfielder was linked with a move to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United.
But the younger Longstaff scored a sensational effort in pre-season against St. Etienne and Bruce opted to throw him into the side on Wednesday night, as Newcastle hosted Brendan Rodgers’ side at St. James’ Park.
James Maddison’s deflected free-kick was cancelled out by Yoshinori Muto’s tap-in, only for Newcastle to lose on penalties in the second round of the Carabao Cup. Isaac Hayden and Jonjo Shelvey both missed penalties.
But Longstaff can hold his head high following his debut, which saw him last the entire 90 minutes for the Tyneside club. Indeed, Newcastle’s rowing injury list could see Longstaff retain his place for Saturday’s league clash against Watford.
Newcastle fans have reacted on Twitter to Longstaff’s display on Wednesday night and many Toon fans congratulated the youngster, as well as showing excitement that the club have another player for the future – despite the defeat.
Thoughts on @NUFC performance vs @LCFC
-M. Longstaff has bright future, never stops running and tidy on the ball
-Defensively we look comfortable in a 5-4-1. Only conceded 1 goal (deflected fk) in 180 mins of football against 2 good teams
-Hayden made some great tackles #NUFC

Bit of a nothing game, Matty Longstaff did well. Was like a pre season friendly. Shelvey, liability gives ball away then gives the foul away for the goal. Willems dives like Tom Daly. Out of the cup again. Move on. #nufc

Disappointing night in the end for #nufc. Cannot fault the effort of some of the players–particularly Matty Longstaff and Muto. Felt that we were unlucky in the end.

Obviously never nice to go out the cup but plenty of positives tonight. Matty Longstaff looks like he’s got some serious potential. We’ve got some great defensive options again this year, back 3 decent tonight. Muto lively and looks like he can contribute this season. #NUFC

Thought Longstaff was superb tonight. Aswell as Darlow, Muto was decent aswell, Clark and Fernandez had a good games. #NUFC

Tough on our lads that. Good performance against (almost) Leicester’s strongest team. If that was a PL game we’d be pleased with a point well won by a much changed #NUFC line up. Fede, Willems, Shelvey, Muto, Longstaff-the-younger were all good. Options for the league now.
