Matty Longstaff was handed his senior debut by Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce as The Toon suffered penalty-shootout heartbreak against Leicester City – but many fans were impressed by their newest star.

Longstaff, 19, has had to watch from the sidelines as older brother Sean stole the headlines during the second half of the campaign – so much so that the midfielder was linked with a move to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United.

But the younger Longstaff scored a sensational effort in pre-season against St. Etienne and Bruce opted to throw him into the side on Wednesday night, as Newcastle hosted Brendan Rodgers’ side at St. James’ Park.

James Maddison’s deflected free-kick was cancelled out by Yoshinori Muto’s tap-in, only for Newcastle to lose on penalties in the second round of the Carabao Cup. Isaac Hayden and Jonjo Shelvey both missed penalties.

But Longstaff can hold his head high following his debut, which saw him last the entire 90 minutes for the Tyneside club. Indeed, Newcastle’s rowing injury list could see Longstaff retain his place for Saturday’s league clash against Watford.

Newcastle fans have reacted on Twitter to Longstaff’s display on Wednesday night and many Toon fans congratulated the youngster, as well as showing excitement that the club have another player for the future – despite the defeat.
