Newcastle fans delighted as Matt Ritchie confirms contract talks are underway

Matt Ritchie has confirmed he’s in talks with Newcastle United about extending his future – and some of the clubs supporters on Twitter are delighted with the update.

The Sun have reported that Championship club Stoke City could make an ambitious move for the 29-year-old in the summer transfer window.

The Sun detailed that the Scotsman had been informed by manager Rafael Benitez that he could leave at the end of the season, as he couldn’t agree a deal to extend his current contract past 2021.

But he’s confirmed that discussions are currently being held about his St James’ Park future.

“Of course,” Ritchie told the Chronicle when asked if he wants to remain at Newcastle.

“There are discussions at the moment, hopefully we can get them resolved. This is a massive football club, I’m really enjoying playing for so until I’m told my services are no longer required, I’m fighting for my life as I do every week to perform.”

Ritchie has been a key player this season for Newcastle and been a regular in Rafael Benitez’s team, which is why he’s received such support from the fans.

He made 39 appearances across all competitions, scoring three goals and supplying nine assists in return.

The left-sided flyer has been a winger during most of his career, but in the last few months looked brilliant in a wing-back position.

Ritchie’s current £45,000-a-week (Spotrac) deal expires in 2021 and he’s in discussions about a new one.

Here are some of the Newcastle fans delighted that Ritchie is in talks, while they are desperate for him to stay:
