Dwight Gayle was handed his first Premier League start of the season in the Boxing Day defeat to Manchester United – and some Newcastle United fans were highly critical of their striker for his performance.
The 29-year-old came into the team at Old Trafford and failed to make the most of his opportunity leading the line.
Steve Bruce’s team did take the lead through midfielder Matty Longstaff, but ended up losing 4-1 in the Premier League fixture.
Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford all scored before half-time to cancel out the Magpies lead, while Martial added another in the second-half.
Newcastle host Everton on Saturday following a quick turnaround during a hectic run of games and will be searching for a response.
A selection of Newcastle supporters on social media were left fuming at the contribution from Gayle on Thursday, as he was substituted off on the hour mark after failing to make an impact.
The centre-forward put a brilliant goalscoring opportunity over the bar to waste a golden chance and apart from that was fairly quiet.
He has failed to score in any of his seven appearances across all competitions this campaign and there is a reason he’s been on the fringes.
Here are some Newcastle fans on Gayle:

Dwight Gayle isn’t making the most of his opportunities. Missed a few sitters you would expect him to score #nufc

Still trying to work out why we still play Gayle. He’s absolutely useless, and our £40million pound striker…that deal smells of sports direct. #NUFC

Dwight Gayle’s level is the championship, we had the possibility of bringing in Rondon while offloading him & the powers that be have left us with 3 players that can play a number 9 one is possibly capable & it’s neither Gayle nor Joelinton, it’s the one we got on a free 🤦🏻♂️ #NUFC

Genuinely surprised to see Gayle had come back out from the changers at half time… no idea he was there. #NUFC
