Newcastle legend Paul Gascoigne has praised the unpopular appointment of Steve Bruce as manager of his former club.
Speaking to TalkSport, ‘Gazza’ has said that the supporters need to get behind Bruce, who has been chosen to replace Rafa Benitez.
He said: “Steve Bruce, for me, is a great appointment. He’s from Wallsend, he’s a great guy, he’s a winner – everyone knows he’s a winner, the amount of medals he’s won. He knows how to win games and he knows how to win championships.
“They’ve been saying that (about a boycott) for thirty years. They’ll still turn up. Newcastle – they work all week just to watch the game on a Saturday. They live for a Saturday, they all do.”

These comments are incredibly wide of the mark from Gascoigne and many Newcastle fans took to Twitter, furious that a fan favourite has isn’t speaking up for the supporters.
Mike Ashley still seems to be getting a relatively easy ride in the media, with the anger coming from fans. But Gascoigne here – while trying to be respectful of the passion the supporters have – shouldn’t be laughing off the idea of a boycott.
We’ve had a look at some of the angry reaction…
