Nabil Bentaleb has claimed on Twitter that Newcastle put up a “good fight” during their 5-0 defeat to Manchester City at The Etihad on Wednesday night – and Toon supporters have disagreed in their masses.
France-born midfielder Bentaleb, 25, started and finished the rout against Pep Guardiola’s side – who were far too strong for Steve Bruce’s side. David Silva produced a masterclass, with Bentaleb struggling to cope with the Spanish veteran.
Silva scored a wonderful free-kick and created two other goals, as Riyad Mahrez, Gabriel Jesus, Raheem Sterling and an own goal saw Newcastle suffer their first defeat in seven Premier League games.
Bentaleb, who remains on loan from German Bundesliga side Schalke until the end of the season, posted on Twitter on Thursday afternoon following the match – claiming his loan side will “never give up” and gave a “good fight”.
In 13th place with five league games left, Newcastle are more than safe – especially after impressive wins since the return to league football. Inspired Allan Saint-Maximin form saw the Toon win matches against Bournemouth and Sheffield United.
Newcastle supporters have reacted to Bentaleb’s Tweet, questioning his claim that Bruce’s side put up a fight against Manchester City and did not give up. Many disagreed with the midfielder, who has a £8.5million permanent clause (Chronicle).
