Sean Longstaff has been ruled out of the upcoming Premier League fixture against Liverpool – and some Newcastle United fans on Twitter believe he should be replaced by his younger brother.
The Magpies travel to Anfield on Saturday afternoon to face early pacesetters Liverpool in the Premier League.
Steve Bruce’s team were already in store for a gigantic test against the reigning Champions League holders, but it may have now become even more difficult.
Longstaff is a confirmed (official Twitter) absentee at the weekend for Newcastle due to a “freak” angle injury he picked up in training.
The 21-year-old central midfielder is regarded as one of the key payers at St James’ Park and his defensive work in front of the back four would have been a great help against a lethal Liverpool attack.
Bruce will need to try find a solution without him, with some fans putting forward Matty Longstaff as a potential replacement.
A selection of Newcastle supporters on social media believe that Matty Longstaff could step in for brother Sean.
The 19-year-old is a highly-rated product to come out of the academy and is more of a box-to-box midfielder than his brother.
But he’s got a tremendous engine in the centre of the park and Newcastle are going to need plenty of work-rate if they are to withstand a Liverpool attack for 90 minutes at the weekend.
Longstaff has played just one senior game in his career, but that was under Bruce this season as he impressed in the Carabao Cup against Leicester City.
It would be a mammoth task to throw him in against Liverpool, but options are thin on the ground and he’s certainly got potential.
Here are some Newcastle fans calling for Longstaff to be drafted in:
No worries, we have Matty Longstaff https://t.co/wdMC3btWze

Ki or Shelvey at Anfield is just asking to lose about 6-0 imo. They don’t have the legs. I’d probably play Matty Longstaff.

Longstaff seems to be the answer to all of our midfield problems, with the way the transfer window went.
