Newcastle United’s Under-23 side suffered a 3-2 home defeat to Wolves on Monday night – but fans have applauded Jonjo Shelvey for his efforts.

The England international is currently in the reserves, as he looks to maintain his game time while suspended. He is available on Saturday.

It comes after being sent of against Spurs, picking up a second yellow card for a tackle he has been criticised for making – given he was on a yellow.

On Monday night, he clocked up 90 minutes in front of Graeme Jones. Not only did he get game time, but Shelvey also laid on two assists for the Toon.

With Newcastle 2-0 down on 50 minutes, Shelvey flicked a switch. His brilliant ball into the box was helped into the net by Charlie Wiggett.

The deficit halved. Then, Newcastle equalised. A lofted pass from Shelvey found the run of in-form Dylan Stephenson, who scored with aplomb.

But Wolves had the final say. With the clock reading 90 minutes, Conor Carty scored a late winner – a cruel end after a brilliant comeback.

What did Newcastle fans think of Shelvey and his performance?

Of course, Shelvey has been struggling for form and momentum in the first team. A calf injury has ruled him out until his red card.

It means he has played just twice this season, the opening-day defeat to West Ham and then against Spurs. But he has staked his claim for Saturday.

Jones’ side face Chelsea and all they have to get a result. Does Shelvey start? Well, Newcastle fans were impressed with the £12million star (BBC).
