Jamal Lewis produced a brilliant display to help Northern Ireland draw with Euro 2020 winners Italy – and Newcastle fans have responded.
Despite having nothing to play for apart from their pride, Northern Ireland were excellent against the European champions – securing a 0-0 draw.
It was a brilliant note to end on, after a desperately disappointing 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign. The draw sees Italy fail to go through.
Roberto Mancini’s side surrendered first place to Switzerland and will now have to win a two-legged play-off. Lewis was excellent on the night.
It has been a tricky 12 months for Lewis. In his first season at Newcastle, the £15million (Sky Sports) signing only played 26 times in all competitions.
This season, he has only played twice. A red card for Northern Ireland in a 2-0 loss to Switzerland in September saw him criticised – in a crucial game.
But on Monday, Lewis was brilliant – facing Sassuolo winger Domenico Berardi. He was defensively solid, but more than willing to get forward.

What are Newcastle fans saying, as Lewis shines for Northern Ireland?
The belief among Newcastle fans is that Steve Bruce’s five-man defence stifled Lewis and his strengths; his pace, and his attacking contribution.
It has seen him fall behind the likes of Matt Ritchie and Paul Dummett in the pecking order. But under attacking boss Eddie Howe, it could change.
Newcastle fans watched on on Monday night with delight, as Lewis starred in green. Many are hopeful that Howe could get a tune out of Lewis.
