Sean Longstaff made his first appearance against Newcastle following a £15m move to Leeds in July.
The man born in North Shields delivered an inspired display against his boyhood club – who he joined at the age of nine and went on to make 214 appearances for – earning the Man of the Match award for his efforts.
Newcastle fans only had good things to say about Sean Longstaff after the match, despite him contributing to a disappointing result for the Magpies.
Newcastle fans all heap praise on Sean Longstaff after 0-0 draw against Leeds
The Leeds No.8 received many complimentary posts from Newcastle supporters after his display at Elland Road.
One supporter posted: “Sean Longstaff playing like he hasn’t forgiven Bruno (Guimaraes) for taking his place in the NUFC starting XI.”
The Englishman largely outdid the Brazil international, as you can see below.
| Player | Passes | Key Passes | Possession Lost | Touches | Ground Duels (Won) | Tackles | Interceptions |
| Sean Longstaff | 31/35 (89%) | 1 | 7 | 52 | 11 (7) | 5 | 2 |
| Bruno Guimaraes | 50/54 (93%) | 0 | 10 | 70 | 12 (6) | 3 | 0 |
Another wrote: “If Sean Longstaff played like that regularly, we would never have sold him.”
A third Newcastle fan said “fair play” to Longstaff after he showed his quality against familiar faces, some of whom he described as his “best friends” when speaking to Sky Sports after the final whistle.
More complimented the 27-year-old for his efforts, showing pride towards the Newcastle academy graduate, one of their own.
Another posted: “Pretty rubbish game for us, but Sean Longstaff can hold his head high after that performance, must have felt so unusual for him playing against what probably feels like his own team mates. Well played Sean.”
Newcastle still hunting for a Sean Longstaff replacement
Longstaff – who Pep Guardiola has praised – departed in search of regular playing time, and Newcastle are still searching for his replacement to add depth to the midfield department.

TBR Football understand Conor Gallagher and Davide Frattesi are options for Newcastle as we approach the 7pm transfer deadline on Monday, with talks held over the past week.
Eddie Howe is so keen to ensure his midfield remains in good shape, that he has even denied Lewis Miley his request to leave on loan – the Newcastle boss feels he needs to keep the England U21 international around.
