Newcastle United might end up coming up short in their pursuit of a new striker tonight, with transfer expert Gianluca DiMarzio telling Sky that a deal for Duvan Zapata is now impossible.

Di Marzio, who regularly reports on big transfer stories from Italy, has been speaking live on Sky tonight about Newcastle and any more potential deals. One of the names being mentioned in relation to The Toon is Atalanta striker Duvan Zapata. The powerful forward has been linked with a £38m move to St James’ Park this month.

However, any deal for Zapata and Newcastle seems to be completely out of the question.

“No – I don’t think so. It’s too late. In Italy, the deadline is finished now so it’s impossible for Atalanta to find a replacement for Duvan Zapata and therefore he won’t be going to Newcastle. We knew that Newcastle tried – as did West Ham,” Di Marzio told Sky tonight.

Newcastle have also seen a deal for Hugo Ekitike fall through. However, they have signed Matt Targett, while Dan Burn is also close to being announced.

TBR’s View: Zapata Always A Risky Choice

The money involved for Zapata always meant this was going to be a tough one to do for Newcastle. And it seems they’ve missed the boat completely now.

Ekitike is the real body blow for the Toon. They were hoping to get the young Frenchman and then call it a day.
