Newcastle eyeing 61-year-old 'wizard' for sporting director role - report
Newcastle United have reportedly identified Luis Campos as a candidate for their sporting director role.
The Magpies are under new ownership, with a Saudi-led consortium taking over from Mike Ashley last week.
Newcastle’s new owners are now looking to restructure the club and made it clear they want to run the Magpies in a sustainable way.
According to Sky Sports, Campos is now in their sights and very much fits the bill.
The 61-year-old, dubbed “The Wizard of Capital Gains”, is renowned for developing players, enjoying on-pitch success, making profits from sales and bringing in top replacements.
Campos – currently a free agent – turned Monaco and Lille into Ligue 1 title winners amid fierce competition from Paris Saint-Germain.
According to Sky Sports, he also made huge profits on player sales during his spells at Monaco and Lille – more than £500million in only four years.
The outlet suggests Campos would view Newcastle as a similar project – a sleeping giant with big potential and a loyal, passionate fan base.
He has been previously linked with Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester United.
Campos would be superb for Newcastle – TBR View
Newcastle’s new owners are certainly going about their business the right way since taking over at St James’ Park.
They’ve made it clear they want to take their time in developing the club and squad, and aren’t rushing into any knee-jerk decisions.
Bringing in a top director of football would be a great starting point, and someone like Campos would be a superb – and realistic – option.
