Newcastle eyeing £35m powerhouse, he’s the ‘complete midfielder’ – report

Newcastle United have a lot of work to do in the January transfer window.

The Magpies now have plenty of financial muscle behind them following their long-awaited takeover.

However, Newcastle are in a Premier League relegation dogfight and need to bolster their ranks.

According to Sky Sports, Magpies boss Eddie Howe has drawn up a lengthy transfer wishlist.

One of the names on said list is Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge.

The Norway international was an important part of the Blades side that sealed a Premier League top-half finish in 2019-20.

However, the 23-year-old was on the sidelines for more than four months due to a hamstring injury.

His club missed him as they lost their battle against relegation in their second top-flight season.

Berge has continued to struggle with a hamstring problem this season and has only made eight appearances for the Blades.

However, he has recently returned to action.

Berge came off the bench against Bristol City last month before playing 45 minutes in the 1-0 win over Fulham earlier this week.

The Times claims the 6ft 4in powerhouse would cost Newcastle £35million – his release clause.

A towering figure, Berge’s size gives him a big edge when it comes to protecting the back line as well as winning the ball further up the pitch.

Former United boss Chris Wilder waxed lyrical about the player, telling VG, as translated by Teamtalk: “I just have to say it: Sander has been unique.

“He is the one who has stood out for us. He is a complete midfielder, he can play as an 8 and as 6, he can play in different formations.”
