Newcastle United are gathering information on former Sunderland defender, Jason Denayer, ahead of making a move for the Belgian in the summer transfer window.
According to Het Nieuwsblad, Denayer is wanted by a number of clubs this summer as a move away from Lyon could be on the cards. And their report says Newcastle have started to collect information on Denayer as they plot their next moves in the market.
Denayer, 26, has been in France with Lyon ever since leaving Manchester City in 2019. He’s since impressed in Ligue 1, becoming one of the better and more consistent defenders in the league. Touted previously as a the ‘new Vincent Kompany’, Denayer is out of contract in the summer.

As yet, there is no sign of Denayer signing fresh terms with Lyon. It is claimed that a new deal remains an option for the versatile defender, but the interest from elsewhere has allowed him to delay a decision.
Newcastle are expected to make a number of new signings if they stay up this season. January proved successful for them, with five new faces arriving. And after three wins on the bounce in the PL, escaping relegation is becoming more and more likely.
TBR’s View: Denayer A Solid Addition For Newcastle
This would be a smart move by the Toon. A free transfer, a good age at 26, and with experience of playing for a top club in Lyon and a top nation in Belgium.
Denayer’s versatility at the back also makes him a noteworthy addition. He is, as we know, predominantly a central defender. However, he can slot in more than comfortably at left or right back if needed.
These are the sorts of signing Newcastle needs to make to keep improving. And for nothing, it really is a no-brainer.
