Newcastle United have lined up a move for Marseille defender Duje Caleta-Car, as a potential back up to their long-standing pursuit of Diego Carlos grinding to an abrupt halt.

The Magpies have been going for Carlos all January but as yet, haven’t made the required breakthrough. Indeed, as of today, it’s been suggested that the likes of Tottenham could well scupper their chances of landing the Seville ace.

And Newcastle have now been forced to put contingency plans together. 90Min reports that Newcastle have now placed Caleta-Car on their list of potential signings, in case the Carlos deal dies off. The Croatian star, who has won four Austrian league titles, has been a regular fixture for Marseille this season.

90Min claims that Caleta-Car has been watched by Newcastle, Liverpool, and West Ham recently. Crucially for Newcastle, they suggest the defender might be available on a loan-to-buy deal right now. That, of course, would suit PIF down to the ground and give them even more leeway in the market.

Known for his pace, Caleta-Car has impressed since arriving in Marseille. Reports in the summer claimed the French outfit could do business at around £17m, if they were tempted to sell.

Eddie Howe must be going mad in private. After what promised to be a window where a host of new faces arrived, so far he has just two in the form of Chris Wood and Kieran Trippier.

Deals are proving hard to do. Clubs want big money and Newcastle are finding out the hard way that it’s not always easy even if you are mega-rich.

In terms of Caleta-Car, he is a solid option. However, he’s a bit of a step down from the likes of Sven Botman and Diego Carlos. The plus side is the loan option. That would suit the club, especially if they do end up going down.
