Newcastle defender Kieran Trippier has had quite the impact on proceedings at St James’ Park since signing for the club in January.
Trippier’s arrival has coincided with the Toon going on a fine run of form. And even if the England man is out with injury at the moment, the England right-back will still be having an influence behind the scenes you feel. He’s a player we don’t often hear much from or about really off the field. However, he has been opening up a bit in a recent interview on the True Geordie podcast.

And interestingly, he has been speaking about Gareth Southgate.
“He’s brilliant. He does have individual meetings with players and that’s what’s so good about him. His man management is brilliant, he’s done a lot for me on and off the field. I respect that and I respect him. He’s a quality man-manager, and a quality manager as well. Him and Steve have a great chemistry. Every meeting he does, individual or a group, it’s good,” Trippier said on the show.
Trippier’s comments on Southgate are relative from a Newcastle perspective given the apparent admiration of the England manager from PIF. A report from 90Min in October claimed that the new Newcastle owners see Southgate as a manager of the Toon in the future. Trippier’s comments here, then, will just add more weight to any positive thoughts PIF have on the England coach.
TBR’s View: Southgate In Club Management Would Be Interesting
Some people think that Southgate would struggle back in the club game. And it is a different kettle of fish to managing an international team. However, he is more experienced now and players obviously like him.
Trippier isn’t the first England player to comment on him either. Jack Grealish called Southgate a ‘brilliant man-manager’ as well. And it’s something that has been documented by other pundits as well.
So, while Eddie Howe is shining at the moment, we can probably expect Newcastle and PIF to be keeping a firm eye on how Southgate gets on in the future.
